RWTH Alumni Reception at the German Ambassador's Residence in Tokyo
Right in time for cherry blossom season the first central get together of RWTH alumni in Japan took place in Tokyo. For many alumni this was a surprising, and in part emotional, reunion with former fellow students after many years. Some met each other for the first time or re-established contact with former acquaintances.
Dr. Hans Carl von Werthern, German Ambassador in Tokyo, and Professor Ernst Schmachtenberg, rector of RWTH Aachen hosted the reception. Over 80 guests, including RWTH Aachen alumni and longstanding collaborative partners, attended the event at the ambassador's grand residence.
In their welcome addresses the German ambassador, Dr. von Werthern, and Professor Schmachtenberg emphasized how important international collaboration is in the face of globalization. A particular interest of Schmachtenberg's, who was visiting Japanese collaborative partners as part of a multi-day trip and was accompanied by other RWTH professors, was to make RWTH better known in Japan as an outstanding place for academic training and research.
With Japan as a strategically selected country of focus for RWTH, strengthened collaborations in research and the recruitment of talented students and researchers are topics of focus within its collaboration with Japan. The ambassador and RWTH rector value the support of alumni, who serve as important intermediaries and multipliers between Germany and Japan.
The alumni used this opportunity to talk with each other, establish contact, and discuss the foundation of a regional alumni association with the RWTH employees. Numerous alumni from different generations indicated their interest in futher activities in order to share their experiences in Aachen with interested individuals in Japan and to hold further network events with alumni there.
