*Belgium in the Spotlight

*History-Languages-Cultures (Geschichte-Sprachen-Kulturen)

*This series focuses on a country, which, since its foundation in 1830/31, has gone through an examplary development away from a centralized state. Belgium became a radically decentralized state on its own accord and its history is entwined with the large European countries. This change is of importance for the development of a future united Europe of different historic and cultural traditions on a large scale. In the "Labratory of Europe", Belgium has always seen itself as a mediator in the middle of Europe. Thus, it only seems logical to have a closer look at this region of encounter and exchange between Romance and Germanic cultures.

About this book

*The German-speaking Community of Belgium is the smallest of three communities which comprise the federal state of Belgium. Its role between Wallonia and Flanders is quiet complex, often mediating during difficult negotiations. Member of this community live in a border region. Du to their own history, they are familiar with different linguistic and cultural influences and display a self-consciousness which includes regional and transnational aspects and can therefor be seen as model of future European coexistence. This volume provides a closer look at the history, the institutions, the legal basis as well as the healthcare system and cultural aspects of living in the German-speaking Community.

*An Intercultural Inventory (Interkulturelle Bestandsaufnahmen)

(2007)

About this book

*Taking a look at Belgium today, without a bias from stereotypes, can be an intercultural adventure. Because, not only in its self-image, but also in a European context our neigboring country is a region of encounter and exchange between Romance and Germanic culture. This volume tries to find answers to the questions of if and why it seems, that the existence of this strictly federalist state is at stake in a unified Europe.
